Norfolk Island is an island off the coast of New South Wales and is under the jurisdiction of that state..... When Captain James Cook discovered it in 1774 he was described it in his "log" as paradise.

This tiny remote island was uninhabited until only 140 years ago. Only nine kilometres across at its widest point and home to less than 2,000 people, Norfolk Island has nonetheless had its moments of history.

In 1778 it became home to one of the cruellest penal colonies in the Pacific and the gravestones still stand. In 1856, after the convicts had left, the descendants of the Bounty mutineers were re-settled there from Pitcairn Island. Life here still moves at the pace of a horse and buggy.

Beautifully restored buildings of early Georgian architecture blend into the natural rolling landscape.

Flora and fauna are plentiful - being the home of thousands of birds. The grand Norfolk Island Pinetrees are native to the island.
