The Australian Antarctic Territory is one of seven external territories administered by the Commonwealth of Australia. It comprises more than 40% of the Antarctic continent, an area about two thirds the size of Australia. Three permanent stations are maintained in the AAT, Mawson, Davis and Casey.

A number of other stations are maintained only during the summer months. The Australian stations are operated by the Australian Government's Antarctic Division, set up in 1948 to administer the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions. (ANARE).
