Betty Cuthbert (the "Golden Girl") is the only Australian woman to have won four Olympic track gold medals.  (No woman in the world has ever won more)

Herb Elliott won the 1960 Olympic 1500m event in record time. When he retired in 1961, he had never been beaten over the 1500m or the mile.

Dawn Fraser, winner of eight Olympic medals, is considered to be Australia's greatest female swimmer.   She was the first female to swim the 100m in under a minute and held the 100m world record for sixteen years.

Marjorie Jackson, (the "Lithgow Flash") was the first Australian woman to win an Olympic track gold medal when she won the 100m and 200m in 1952.

Murray Rose is the only Australian male to have won four gold medals and the only person ever to have won the Olympic men's 400 metres freestyle twice in a row.
