There are no strangers here, only friends you haven't met!

The Willows Gemfields

of Central Queensland

Sapphire Diggings are only a walk away from the Willows Gemfields, which is well known for its world class sapphires, especially the golden yellow, green, blue and rare pinks. Information and free mud maps are available to new-comers and while we can't promise everyone a sapphire, we can gurarantee you will make friends  in this unique and amicable environment.

It's a holiday or life-style that gets more popular each year!

A Guide for  Novice Gem Hunters

  • Depth of top soil may vary and does not usually carry sapphire.

  • The presence of white or grey ash in the first wash towards the bottom of the stone and gravel layer usually indicates sapphire bearing ground.

  • Billy boulders are the large stones often protruding through the top soil and indicate wash or gravel.

  • Areas vary, and the billy boulders are sometimes on the bottom, firmly impregnated in the clay.  This may be shallow or deep, and when there is a second layer of wash, there may be more clay and finally sandstone.

  • It is a good idea to process your gravel by sections and/or layers so that if you find colour (Sapphire) you know exactly what level to concentrate on in your particular diggings as this can vary in different areas.

Happy Digging!
